The Shreveport Police Department is hosting a Domestic Violence Prevention seminar this week.

It's being held Tuesday, January 27, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Assembly Room on the second floor of the Shreveport Police Complex.

Detectives will be onhand to provide an in-depth look at domestic violence. They'll discuss the dynamics of abusive relationships and how those cases are investigated. They'll also touch on topics like protective orders and the signs of domestic abuse.

Sgt. Lindsay Bonner says the Domestic Violence Unit investigated 540 domestic abuse cases in 2014, and 538 in 2013. One of those was the domestic violence death of Alicia West.

"Any cases that are unnatural death in manner are investigated by our Homicide Unit," Sgt. Bonner said. "If we have any historical information in regards to that couple, we'll provide that and assist them with their investigation."

Sgt. Bonner says a representative from Project Celebration is expected to attend.

"Hopefully, Ms. Petrina Jenkins will be one of the members that comes. She said she would be there, and she's going to bring some other people with her," Sgt. Bonner said. "So they can answer some questions from the advocacy side, and anything to do with counseling."

He's hoping to have someone with Caddo Parish Court there, as well. There's no cost to attend the seminar. The goal is "to empower victims and eliminate the scourge of domestic violence from the community."
