A Bill was announced last week in Texas called Teaching Over Testing Act which would drastically reduce the impact of standardized testing in the state and could do away with STAAR Testing all together. Rep. Jason Isaac who is pushing the bill said "Texas is a diverse state, but if there's anything people from Amarillo to Brownsville and El Paso to Beaumont and people from both political parties can agree on, it's that STAAR is a disservice to the students we will one day rely on as our next generation of leaders."

The bill has 4 main focuses..

  1. Allowing school districts to select alternative test providers
  2. Reducing the number of tests
  3. Removing STAAR scores from teacher evaluations
  4. Reducing the weight of STAAR scores in A-F ratings

So far the bill has received support from both sides of the aisle which is great news for those supporting it!  STAAR Testing costs Texas taxpayers millions of dollars every year some estimates saying hundreds of millions.

Personally doing away with standardized testing would be the best thing we could do in schools! I remember over half of our year was focused on passing one test when we could have been learning new things.
