More flooding relief help is on the way for Shreveport-Bossier and the region.

Governor Bobby Jindal and the Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) announced the distribution of an additional 110,000 sandbags and continued action in response to flooding concerns along the Red River.

Recent rains have caused the river to rise to levels not seen since 1990.  Governor Jindal last week issued an emergency declaration after a Unified Command Group (UCG) meeting with state agencies and ordered GOHSEP to send 25,000 sandbags to help protect Bossier Parish from high water.  State resources have been mobilized and remain on standby for response.  GOHSEP today hosted a conference call with state and local leaders for an update on actions taken and potential requests for help.

Here is an update on the number of sandbags being delivered to each parish or municipality by June 2nd:

Bossier Parish:
55,000

Caddo Parish:
20,000

City of Shreveport:
10,000

Natchitoches Parish:
10,000

Rapides Parish:
30,000

Vernon Parish:
10,000

Bossier, Natchitoches, Caddo and Red River Parishes have also signed emergency declarations due to potential flood issues.  Other local governments are considering the same measure.  The Red River is already above flood stage from Texarkana to Alexandria.  It is expected to crest by June 6th.

Governor Jindal and GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis urge everyone in potential impact areas to get a game plan to protect their homes, families and businesses.  That includes making an evacuation plan, gathering emergency supplies and monitoring local weather reports. GOHSEP will continue working with local emergency managers in case additional state resources are needed because of this event.
