If Season 11′s rocking country girl Skylar Laine wants to make it country, baby, it’s okay. She was born that way. She countrified two non-country songs on ‘American Idol‘ tonight (April 18) during both her performances. The contestants were asked to perform a modern song as as well as classic soul tune this evening and Laine did what she does best.

It was double songs all the way on ‘American Idol’ and who better to sing a double than the guy with a double name? Phillip Phillips started his “final seven” battle with some delicious ‘You Got It Bad’ by Usher. And now we’ve all got it bad, and can’t wait for our chance to meet up with Phillips in the midnight hour after his ‘In the Midnight Hour.’

Elise Testone found herself in the bottom three once again last week, and this week she seemed more than determined to stake her claim in the competition and get herself off that lower rung. After joking that Testone seems to have a vacation home in the bottom three, Jimmy Iovine encouraged the vocalist to nail it this week.

Hollie Cavanagh was challenged to sing a new and an old song on tonight’s episode of ‘American Idol.’ Each contestant was tasked with performing a hit from the 21st century in the first round of performances, and the Top 7 had to do live renditions of soul classics for their second (it was actually modeled after the late Dick Clark‘s program ‘American Bandstand’). Colton Dixon felt his past few ‘American Idol‘ performances lacked his patented rock element. He brought it back on tonight’s episode (April 18) where he was able to perform one modern song and one throwback.
