After a humiliating defeat in Tuesday's Indiana primary, Ted Cruz announced that he is exiting from the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

"We left it all on the field in Indiana. We gave it everything we've got but the voters chose another path," Cruz said Tuesday night. "So with a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign."

Cruz's campaign was marred by some embarrassing missteps in its final weeks, including referring to a basketball hoop as a "ring" and seeming to fail to notice when running mate Carly Fiorina apparently fell off a stage in front of him.

This latest development leaves frontrunner and very likely Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Ohio Governor John Kasich, who despite coming in a distant third in the Indiana primary, vows to stay in the race until Trump has the required amount of delegates to secure the nomination.
