It looks like NBC has a much-needed hit: "The Voice" was the top-rated series on Wednesday night, besting ABC's reliable ratings winner "Dancing With the Stars" and Fox's popular musical series "Glee," according to preliminary numbers.

"The Voice" -- which features Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton as musical coaches to aspiring singing stars -- began its two-hour premiere at 9 p.m., garnering a 5.1 rating/13 share in the adults 18-49 demo, and 11.7 million total viewers.

The "Dancing With the Stars" results show at 9 on ABC was a distant second, with a 3.5/9 in the demo and 17.9 million total viewers. (The good news for "DWTS" is that last night's performance marked a 17 percent improvement over the previous week.)

Fox's special 90-minute, Lady Gaga-themed "Glee," which began at 8, took third place in the ratings race, garnering a 3.4/10 in the demo and 8.5 million total viewers.
