To be fair, one of these is served at the fair, but what excuse do the others have?

When I was a kid, I used to be so brave. I would try just about anything. So if you slid one of these dishes in front of me, I would probably take a big bite and smile through it. Now, I think it would take more coaxing. The odd thing is that these are popular foods.

As the kids say these days, "But why tho..."

I may not understand it because I grew up in California and you may not understand what we used to eat either. I guess that's the beauty of America. So what are the foods that are popular in the Ark-La-Tex, but when you really think about them, they're pretty gross?

FashionBeans.com recently compiled this list and here's what they found for our neck of the woods...

Arkansas - Buffalo Ribs

These aren't ribs from a buffalo. Instead these are ribs from a buffalo fish. This is a massive freshwater fish, similar to carp, that's easily bigger than your head and feeds long the bottom on the water in which it lives.  According to Food Network, you can bake, poach, sautee, or grill these fish, but they don't have a recipe for the ribs.

Louisiana - Nutria

Essentially, nutria is a rodent. It's also known as the coypu. It's an herbivore that spends quite a bit of time in the water as well.  It looks like a beaver and a porcupine had a baby. I don't know about you, but they look too cute to eat.

Texas - Deep Fried Butter

All the rage at the State Fair, I can't help but shudder when I think of this. Butter is supposed to supplement a meal, not be the meal. This is a full stick of butter (probably frozen) on a stick, battered, and deep fried. Some are topped with a glaze or chocolate sauce.
