Timbaland Addresses Why He Didn’t Perform at Flint Water Crisis Charity Event

Say it ain’t so, Timbo. Producer extraordinaire Timbaland is being accused of refusing to perform at a charity event to raise money for the water crisis in Flint, Mich.

The Virginia super producer was scheduled to perform at Club Bleu in Detroit on Thursday night (Jan. 28). Things went left early on after the beatmaker apparently felt some type of way because the club did not stock his bubbly of choice, Jay-Z’s Armand de Brignac. Instead he was served gave him Dom Perignon. In all, he and his entourage chugged down two bottles of Patron, three bottles of Ciroc, two bottles of D’usse and one bottle of Disaronno Originale Italian Liqueur.

“They had about 15 bottles of liquor and champagne, which is extremely excessive especially for a charity event,” club co-owner Mitchell Jaworski told the New York Daily News. “They seemed more concerned about getting every drop of liquor.”

Per his contract, Tim was supposed to do a 30-minute DJ set and perform five to eight songs. But when it came time to hit the stage, he reportedly stood onstage nodding to the music and failed to perform. “His management (took) classlessness to a new level when they said Timbaland did ‘not feel like’ performing,” Jaworski said. “They then insisted that we show them the signed contract for the night and where the stipulation was for the ‘live’ performance. Finally management relented and literally had to wake Timbaland up so he could proceed to stand behind the decks and nod his head for 30 minutes.”

Despite the show not going as planned, promoters were still able to raise over $3,000 for the cause.

Timbaland addressed the entire situation in an Instagram comment to a fan. After an Instagram user by the name of @kala_1212 commented on people being quick to judge the situation without knowing all the details, the Mosley Music Group leader wrote to her directly.

Punctuation aside, Timbaland got his point across and confirms that he did donate to the cause but was asked at the last minute to do a performance. He also apologizes to those fans that were lied to by promoters.

“@kala_1212 u look a smart girl I want everybody to think I wasn’t suppose to perform think about it why would I do that see what I need to do for now on call these promoter out that not rite for the fans and me now I’ve gave money and came and they ask me at last min sorry to the people who lied to y’all but what kills me is that y’all believe anything these days u believe other and not the source u believe a text and y’all debating over black and white letters,” he wrote on Instagram, courtesy of The Shade Room below.

Tim’s representatives released the following statement to Billboard:

“Unfortunately the statement made by the promoter in Detroit is simply not true. Timbaland is an extremely generous person who agreed to a much lower fee for this event to raise money for the Flint, Michigan water crisis. The promoter was fully aware that this was not a full band performance on stage, yet still promoted it as such. The club was still able to raise money for charity, which was our goal in doing this event all along.”
