This weekend is the annual Ridinger family reunion in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. My in-laws have been reuning every year that my wife and I have been married.  It's 3 days of family, food, 42, and football.  (If you're not sure what 42 is, check out this link.  I didn't know what it was until I met my wife, and learning how to play was a prerequisite to joining the family.)

Several years ago, we hopped on the Fantasy Football train and the annual draft is this weekend.  What started out as just a small league with a few teams, has grown into a league with 3 divisions.  With a cash prize and championship trophy on the line, the competition is fierce, but friendly.  My brother-in-law is the "commissioner" of the league and he's busy putting cheat-sheets together for everyone as an aid to picking our teams.

We have the same debates as every league: Do you take a quarterback, wide receiver, or running back in the first round?  Or do you take the highest-rated player, regardless of position? My position is that if you don't get the #1 or #2 running back or receiver, take the top quarterback.  Basically, it all depends on your draft position.

So, who should be the Top 5 picks in this year's draft?  Depends on who you ask? And, though no one's asking me, here are mine:

  1. David Johnson-RB-Phoenix Cardinals.  My wife has had him the last couple of years, and he's an absolute beast.
  2. Le'Veon Bell-RB-Pittsburgh.  I had him a couple of years ago, and he was a points machine.  Haven't been able to get him since.
  3. Antonio Brown-WR-Pittsburgh.  I've passed him over a couple of times over the last few years, and I've ended up regretting it each time.
  4. Aaron Rogers-QB-Green Bay.  The guy is almost guaranteed to get you at least 25 points every game.
  5. Julio Jones-WR-Atlanta.  Even though the Falcons collapsed in last year's Super Bowl they'll be in contention again, largely because of Jones' play.

With my position in the draft this year, I doubt any of these players will be available when my turn comes to pick.  So, I'm going to quit writing now and get back to work. (Just don't tell my boss what I'm actually working on.)
