The Underworld franchise has hung on with the best of them, but might finally mutate into that long-discussed TV series. Director Len Wiseman is allegedly moving forward with the TV project, which is said to be “definitely less comic book in its tone and character.”

At least some version of the Underworld TV series has been in development since 2012, prior to the most recent Underworld: Blood Wars film, but franchise director Len Wiseman nonetheless tells Deadline that he’ll executive produce the potential TV series with Sketch Films, Lakeshore Entertainment’s Tom Rosenberg, Gary Lucchesi and Eric Reid. The subject matter isn’t entirely clear, though we should expect something distinct from the movies in the “premium cable/digital space”:

The series will be a pretty big departure from the films. I don’t want to say it’s more adult, but it’s definitely less comic book in its tone and character.

Back in 2015, Wiseman offered another update on the proceedings:

There’s been a lot of conversations and even development on what that series would be. It’s really appropriate for television, in terms of how those characters can really tie in, but also become something new. It’s really an attractive space. I don’t want to put a date on it because then that’s going to be printed and it might not happen in that timeframe, but it is a thought.

The Underworld franchise stars Kate Beckinsale in a central role, and moved from 2003 beginnings to five total films, so what might a TV branch of the franchise cover?
