Lots of celebrations going on in the next couple of weeks in honor of Veterans Day, which is November 11, 2014. Here are some of the ones we know about so far.

    Monday, November 3

    The Bossier Council on Aging presents its Celebration of Veterans. It features the Bossier High School ROTC Honor Guard, commentary from Col. John Johnson, a musical presentation by the BCOA Singing Seniors Choir, and Mr. Ray Urban presenting his World War II Remembrance, complete with trivia and props from his private collection of memorabilia. All former and current servicemen and women, from all branches of the military, are invited. The celebration starts at 10 a.m. at the BCOA on Bearkat Drive, across from Bossier High School.

    Wednesday, November 5

    Veterans Parade and Ceremony at the Northwest Louisiana War Veterans Home. The celebration features Benton High School's LA-961 AFJROTC, and Benton High's band/choir will participate. The ROTC will conduct the POW/MIA ceremony. That begins at 9:30 a.m.

    Friday, November 7

    Veterans Assembly at Legacy Elementary at 9 a.m. and Stockwell Place Elementary at 1 p.m.

    Veterans Rap and Graffiti Art at Central Park Elementary at 9:30 a.m.

    Sunday, November 9

    Veterans Honor Parade at the State Fair of Louisiana. Local schools and ROTC programs will be featured in the event. Parkway's Pride of Pantherland Band will play and members of Cope Middle School's Military Club will march. The parade starts at 2 p.m.

    Tuesday, November 11 (Veterans Day)

    Margaritaville Resort Casino will honor veterans with a complimentary lunch buffet, available from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

    The Thrifty Peanut Book & Media Warehouse will lower its large flag and invite all veterans who wish to participate the opportunity to sign the flag in honor of their service. Afterward, the flag will be displayed at the Shreveport store. The event includes free chili dogs, and veterans and their immediate families can enjoy half-price items in the book store. Everything runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the location on Youree Drive (the old Wright's Sound Gallery).

    Veterans Day Tattoo at Parkway High School. This year's ceremony will honor world-renowned aviation artist and Navy veteran Roy Grinnell. He's the official artist of the Air Force Aces Association. That starts at 9 a.m.

    Veterans Day Program at Greenacres Middle school beginning at 9 a.m. Students invite family members with ties to the military, and World War II veterans will attend.

    "Thankful Americans" program at Benton High School. At 8 a.m., local veterans will be the guests of honor at a Coffee and Cakes reception in the Benton High School Library. At 9 a.m. in the school gym, the annual Veterans Day program will commence. Eric Simmons from Springhill will be the guest speaker.

    Airline High School hosts a Veterans Day assembly in the newly-remodeled AHS Auditorium. The program begins at 9 a.m. and features guest speaker Billy Weatherall, owner of Christ Fit Gym and Drill Sergeant with the Army Reserves.

    Cope Middle School hosts its annual Veterans Day Program at 1:50 p.m. in the school gym. Cope's bands and choirs will perform several songs and there will be student readings of "Letters to the Front" and Patriot's Pen" essays that were school winners.

    Centenary College hosts its 3rd annual Veterans Day Tribute. It starts at 11 a.m. in the Hurley Music Building's Anderson Auditorium. The event honors the lives and dedication of veterans and is free and open to the public. Lt. Gen. Stephen Wilson, Commander of the Air Force Global Strike Command, will deliver the keynote address.     Saturday, November 8

    Motorcycle Freedom Ride Parade at Riverpark Church (formerly Hamel's Park) on E. 70th Street. Features live music, a bike show, bike games, car show & shine, silent auction and 50/50 drawing. 100% of the proceeds help our local veterans. All ages welcome. Cost is $3 a person and children 12 and under get in free with an adult. The event runs from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

    Monday, November 10

    LSU Shreveport hosts its Veterans Day Program at 11 a.m. at the flagpole in the center of campus. Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Timothy Sloan will be the guest speaker. Find out more by calling (318) 797-5390.
