Beau Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, died Saturday at the age of 46 after a battle with brain cancer.

"The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words," the vice president said in a statement. "We know that Beau's spirit will live on in all of us—especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter."

The statement went on to say, "In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us ever knew."

Beau Biden was diagnosed with brain cancer in August 2013.  The vice president office says that he died surrounded by family.

"Beau Biden believed the best of us all," President Obama said in a statement. "For him, and for his family, we swing our lanterns higher."

He added, "Michelle and I humbly pray for the good Lord to watch over Beau Biden, and to protect & comfort his family."

Sadly, this is not the first tragedy to affect the Biden family. Vice President Biden's first wife and 13-month-old daughter were killed in a car accident in 1972.
