For some folks, it's quite common to run into a long lost cousin grocery shopping or see a stranger with the same last name as them.  As it turns out some surnames (aka last names) are way more commonplace than others.  For example, everyone knows that "Smith" is one of the most common last names in the US.  Did you know it was the most common name in 40 out of 50 states?  Following Smith - Johnson, Miller, Jones, and Williams are the most common last names in the US.

The variety in surnames don't really show up until you look at the Southwest United States.  According to Ancestry.com, states with large Latino populations (like Texas, Arizona, and California) buck the trend by adding last names like Garcia, Hernandez, Martinez, and Chavez in such large numbers - names like Smith and Williams are pushed out of the top 3.

In Louisiana, the top 3 surnames are: Smith, Williams, and Johnson.  If that's your last name, odds are you have a pretty big family reunion.
