Shreveport-Bossier will always have our heart, but Lafayette could be a strong contender.

Retirement sounds pretty good, doesn't it? It almost sounds as good as childhood. You (hopefully) don't have to work, you can travel and often times the only thing you have to worry about is making sure you spend time with your loved ones. In fact, a recent survey by Merill Lynch and Age Wave, says most people choose their retirement locations near their family.

But if you're not choosing to be close to family, maybe you should consider Lafayette.

Financial adviser Kiplinger recently compiled a list of the 50 Best Places to Retire in the US. They looked at several contributing factors like population, the share of population over the age of 65, the cost of living, the average income for households 65 and older, and more.

Kiplinger says Lafayette scored high in each of these categories.

12.5 percent of the population is over the age of 65 and the cost of living is 9.5 percent below the national average. In addition, Lafayette features many activities for the outdoor lovers with the Mississippi Flyway and the Atchafalaya Loop of America's Wetland Birding Trail. Not to mention, Lafayette is loaded with Cajun and Creole culture.

What do you think? Would you retire in Lafayette?
