The Shreveport Police Department has announced that they will be holding a "safety checkpoint" in Shreveport next week. But unlike the "sobriety checkpoints" you might be familiar with, this will not be a late night checkpoint. This upcoming "safety checkpoint" will be happening in the afternoon and evening hours.

The checkpoint will be run by the Shreveport Police Department Traffic Unit on Monday, May 23, 2022. The checkpoint will run from 4pm to 9pm on Monday evening. In a release, the Shreveport Police Department says its to kick off the “Click it or Ticket campaign.”

Shreveport Police will not name the road, or roads, that the checkpoint will take place on. All they have indicated is that it will be in East Shreveport.

According to the release from SPD, this checkpoint will work to identify and address drivers who are not wearing seat belts, but is not limited to that offense. Obviously anyone driving under the influence will be addressed, but it is likely that police will address inspection stickers, registration tags, and more.

Authorities report that 2022 has had a rise in traffic accident fatalities across the country, and SPD says that is true for our local area as well.

Shreveport Police say the funding for the checkpoint is being provided by a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
