Anne Hathaway’s Live-Action ‘Barbie’ Film Delayed Until 2020
Anne Hathaway's live-action Barbie film has been delayed two years by Sony and will now release on May 8, 2020.
The studio originally set the film, based on the popular Mattel toy line, to release on Aug. 8, 2018.
Hathaway stepped into the role after Amy Schumer dropped out of the project in March 2017 due to scheduling conflicts. The comedian responded to Hathaway's casting calling the actress "perfect" for the role.
The script, which will receive more work, follows a woman realizing that she doesn't fit into the perfect land of Barbies and journeys to the real world.
The film is set to be directed by Alethea Jones and is being produced by Amy Pascal, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald with Mattel President and COO Richard Dickson executive producing.
Sony also announced new dates for other upcoming films. Superfly will arrive on June 15; horror film Slender Man has been pushed back to Aug. 24; The Girl in the Spider's Web starring Claire Foy has been moved to Nov. 9; Holmes and Watson starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly has been delayed until Dec. 21; and an untitled animated project from directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will open on Feb. 7, 2020.
