A Disaster Movie About Other Disaster Movies

In 2000 the film Scary Movie captivated audiences as a cheesy horror comedy parody film, mocking other notable films like ScreamThe Blair Witch, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The success of Scary Movie led to five more sequels, with one still in the works slated to release sometime in 2025. The parody style of movie inspired Dimension Films, Miramax Films, The Weinstein Company, and filmmakers Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer to create other movies with the same formula.

Friedberg and Seltzer went on to write, direct, and produce films like Date Movie, Epic Movie, and Disaster MovieDisaster Movie was intended to be a comedic parody of disaster films like Poseidon, The Happening, and Snakes on A Plain.

A Disaster of a Movie (Pun Intended)

With a release date of August 29th, 2008 Disaster Movie pulled in $2 million on it's opening day and $5 million over the 3-day weekend. The film cost a budget of $20 million and only pulled in $17 million in the U.S.

"It's bad for all the reasons you'd think it'd be bad, and even by that low setting it finds a way to sink even lower." - Doug Walker, Nostalgia Critic

Critics were not kind to Disaster Movie, with IGN's Todd Gilchrist giving the film a 0-star rating writing, "IGN can't give less than zero stars for a movie, but Disaster Movie deserves it." Other's were jsut as harsh with their reviews, film reviewer Jason Pirodsky writing in 2008, "Disaster Movie is awful and proud of it, and not nearly as entertaining as you expect a bad movie to be."
