Bossier Parish Police Jury to Show How to Make Your Land More Attractive to Wild Turkeys
It was a beautiful morning sometime back in the mid 1990's and I was travelling east on I-20. As I approached the Dixie Inn exit, I looked over at the shoulder beside the ramp, and I couldn't believe my eyes.
It was a turkey. A real, live turkey. First one I had ever spotted in Louisiana.

I had seen numbers of them in other states, but never in Louisiana. I knew that sometime back in the 80's they had brought in a number of turkeys to the Ouachita Parish area, but this was the first one I'd ever laid eyes on.
Of course, as the story unfolds, turkeys have proven they like it here. They're very prolific and have managed to spread to most of North Louisiana.
But, What About Those Who Want Even More Turkeys?
However, there are some people whose real passion is turkey hunting and they'd like to see even more on their land or land they manage.
Well, thanks to the Bossier Parish Police Jury, those people will have the opportunity to learn exactly how to make that happen with a free workshop scheduled later this month.
The free Land Management for Wild Turkeys workshop will be offered on March 29 at the Viking Dr. Bossier Sheriff’s Substation in Bossier City.
What Will Be Taught?
Wildlife specialists will discuss predation in turkeys, habitat improvement, turkey communication, turkey hunting, and how timber producers can improve wildlife habitat.
This presentation is hosted by the Bossier Parish Police Jury, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Trailblazer RC&D.
Even Though It's Free, You Still Need to Pre-Register
Though there's no charge to attend this workshop, pre-registration is requested. To pre-register, or for more information on the workshop, call or text (318) 237-8350 and provide your contact information and the name of the workshop.
Bossier Sheriff’s Substation is located at 2510 Viking Dr. in Bossier City. On-site registration/sign-in will begin at 5:30 pm on March 29.
Workshop presentations will begin at 6:00 pm and will be conducted in accordance with Louisiana Department of Health COVID-19 guidelines.
