Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington presented a check for $11,328 Tuesday afternoon to Deena Shy, wife of Reserve Deputy Gregg Shy who is battling cancer, representing monies raised during the fish fry Oct. 23.

Deputy Shy has been a Reserve Deputy with the Bossier Sheriff’s Office since 2008, and in early May, he was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He has had numerous chemotherapy treatments and hospitalized for a few months. He is currently in Georgia and is scheduled for a stem cell transplant on Nov. 20. The monies raised at the fish fry will help with some of the unexpected family and medical expenses. More than 1,000 fish plates were sold, and more than $2,500 in monetary donations were given.

“A lot of people helped make the fish fry a success, and to see more than 1,000 people in our community help support Gregg and his family is a tremendous blessing,” said Sheriff Whittington. “We want him to know that we are behind him, praying for him and are pleased to present this check to help support him during his fight with cancer. Get well soon!”
