Historic First: Caddo Parish Officially Declares June as Pride Month
Big news for Shreveport this week as the Caddo Parish Commission has officially recognized June as Pride Month. This historic move celebrates and acknowledges the LGBT community right here in the SBC.
During the Caddo Parish Commission's second regular session of June the proclamation was passed which officially recognized Pride Month, a celebration that has been in practice in places across the country since the 1970s.
Pride Month is observed in June as a way to honor the 1969 Stonewall rebellion, a protest turned to a riot that many mark as the beginning of the modern LGBT acceptance movement. This is the first time Caddo Parish has acknowledged Pride Month as an official celebration, becoming one of the first parishes in Northern Louisiana to do so.
Though Pride Month is now officially recognized, the proclamation was met with resistance from locals, even some on the commission spoke down on the resolution as a waste of time. One local told the commission that they would not recognize Pride Month but rather, "June is 'Family Month,' not LGBT Pride Month."
The news is a win for the LGBT community of Shreveport, an already thriving subsect of the city's culture. Since 2019 Shrevepride has brought together the LGBT community with events like Q-Prom, an event that welcomes all in the city "regardless of sex, gender, race, or ability."
This year's Q-Prom will be on Saturday, June 21st. A safe space for the LGBT community of Shreveport with live music, food, and drink.
