Childish Gambino joined the chorus of artists paying tribute during live shows to Mac Miller this weekend. At a concert Saturday night (Sept. 8) in Chicago, Gambino dedicated his song "Riot" to the late rapper and introduced the performance with a heartfelt benediction.

The actor, writer and musician opened the monologue with a critique of the media industry's rush to produce Mac Miller-related content in the wake of the rapper's tragic death by an apparent overdose on Friday.

"This Mac Miller shit got me fucked up. And I see some of y'all taking out your phone. Put your phones down," Gambino said, according to fan footage. "I don't want to commodify this moment. This is a moment, you know? I don't want this to get on the internet and be sold again and again because like, that's what's happening to him right now. He's not even allowed to really be dead."

“Like my heart was broken … and I feel good about being sad, because it tells me that he was special, that I had a special moment. Everybody in this room deserves that.

"He was so nice. Y'all don't know. He was the sweetest guy," Glover continued. "A lot of critics were like, yo, this corny-ass White dude, just like they're like, yo, this corny-ass Black dude, and we used to talk. And this kid, he just loved music, and we should be allowed to be sad about that."

Gambino closed by expressing his love for Miller and encouraging fans to not be discouraged by online criticism.

"They'll make a narrative about you, but we're all too complex to be a narrative. So I just want to say, I love you, Mac. And I just want to tell you guys, I love you. And this song is for him because I feel like sometimes he wanted to let go," he said, transitioning into a rendition of his Awaken, My Love song, "Riot."

Drake, Elton John, Ludacris, J. Cole and more have also mourned Miller's death during performances in recent days. The Pittsburgh native's cause of death has not yet been publicly confirmed, but it is believed evidence of drug use was cleared from his home before police arrived.
