Here in Louisiana, winter isn't typically a major concern. Maybe we get a few days with freezing temps, but typically, that's about all. We don't see too much snow or ice. There's no real need to own a snow blower or ice scrapper. It's just not something we typically have to concern ourselves with.

However, thanks to the Polar Vortex, things might be slightly different this year. According to the weather experts, some severe storms will be moving in Saturday or Sunday, and then it's gonna get cold. Like below freezing cold. The 10 day forecast is calling for temps to drop below freezing every day next week. They're saying the low will be 26 on Sunday and every day until Saturday 11th will feature lows below freezing.

Plus, there's a chance of snow in the forecast.

Will It Snow in Shreveport?

On average, it only snows in Shreveport once every other year. And during the 23/24 winter season, we saw one day with some snow. So, most of the experts were predicting that we wouldn't see any this year.

However, as the they say, plans have changed. According to current weather predictions, there's at least a 40% chance of snow/wintery mix next Friday (January 10th). I say at least because every forecast has it listed, but all of them seem to have a different prediction. Some say there's an 80% chance, others are saying 50%.

So, I guess the best way to say it is this: There's a better than average chance that we see some snow next week. With that said, it doesn't sound like this will be a 'snowpocalypse' type situation. If it snows, it may be a light dusting at best.

As mentioned at the very top, we don't often get freezing temps or snow in Shreveport. So, when it happens, people freak out a bit. However, if you prepare a bit and stay calm, we can get through this with limited issue.

The big thing experts will tell you is to minimize travel and stay indoors. Not only does it reduce the risk of health concerns like hypothermia and frost bite, but extreme cold plays hell on vehicles. Those concerns could leave you stranded on the side of the highway or cause you to wreck.

Speaking of travel, if you have to go out, be sure to be prepared. Keep your gas tank at least half full to help prevent the tank from freezing (yes, that's a thing that really happens) and be sure that your car has plenty of anti-freeze and that your tires are fully aired up. It is also a good idea to build yourself a winter survival kit. Some of the items that you should keep in your vehicle are blankets, a coat, gloves, water, food, those handwarmer things hunters use, jumper cables, boots and a shovel. The goal is to have stuff to keep you safe and warm in your car, but in case you have to mobilize in an emergency situation, you don't want to be walking the highway in flip-flops and a t-shirt when it is -5 out.
