Believe it or not, this "ethical non-monogamy" is gaining acceptance across the US. The Advocate reports that around 1.2 to 2.4 million people in this country are already trying out some form of polyamory. The numbers from a 2012 survey of 4,062 poly-identified individuals ages 16 to 92, conducted by Loving More, reveal that 49.5% of the responders are female. 35.4% identified as male, and the remaining 15.1 % either declined to choose between male and female or wrote in alternate genders.
Polygamy (multiple partner marriage) has seen more acceptance on the past years (leaping to 16% from 7% in 2001), as have other forms of non-traditional, officially recognized unions. If this trend continues, it's only a matter of time before the practice is accepted across the U.S.
