New Super-Hero Show Features A Louisiana Native
DC's new animated series Creature Commandos features a prominent main character from Louisiana, find out who it is and a bit about the show here.
Superhero or Monster?
Starting on December 5, 2024, Creature Commandos is an animated adult superhero series from DC and James Gunn based on the "Project M" story from DC's Weird War Tales comic book series.
The show follows a group of supernatural monsters and inhuman creatures who are part of Task Force M, essentially the Suicide Squad but with Frankenstein.
A Louisianian Leads the Charge
Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis, is the director of the United States government's Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans (ARGUS), and she calls Lafayette, Louisiana home.
Task Force M was assembled because Task Force X (more famously known as the Suicide Squad) was shut down by the United States government. Task Force X was put together by Amanda Waller by drafting non-human inmates from high-security prisons since the government had outlawed her from putting "human lives" in danger.
Well if you've watched all of the shows and movies, you'll find that there's no mention of Waller being from Louisiana, but the comics give us one clue we're missing. Suicide Squad #13 (2012) reveals Waller's hometown when the villain Black Spider takes Waller's grandmother hostage.
The name of Lafayette isn't even spoken by a character in the entire issue of the comic book, instead, it's one overlay graphic that reads "LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA: AMANDA WALLER'S HOME."
Comic Books are Silly Sometimes
As an aside researching this topic was difficult as Louisiana doesn't get featured often in DC comics and movies, but a few things about Louisiana that have been established in the DC universe made me chuckle.
On the fan websites that archive and catalog everything superhero, with pages and pages of information about Batman, Superman, epic battles, cool sci-fi tech, and more, there exists a page for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs because they made an appearance in 2013's Man of Steel on a TV in the background of a scene. It is also officially established within the continuity of the DC movies that Louisiana voted for a Republican in the 2008 presidential election (that too is mentioned on these fan sites).
