The CW is getting ready to take a big leap forward in horror. The network has begun developing a one-hour horror anthology entirely written and directed by women, with Drew Barrymore and a former Scream boss venturing into the Black Rose Anthology.

Per Deadline, Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen’s Flower Films will back the series with former MTV Scream showrunner Jill Blotevogel and CBS TV Studios, hoping to “explore some of humanity’s deepest fears from a woman’s unique perspective.” The Black Rose Anthology will feature vignettes exploring “guilt, jealousy, repression, paranoia, insanity, sexual obsession and survival through a modern and distinctly feminine lens.”

The CW is well-known for both genre and a few horror-tinged series with a female gaze, but this would be the first entirely written and directed by women. Worth nothing; the Supernatural franchise may even provide an inroad, as the network is currently developing female-centric spinoff Wayward Sisters.

Barrymore herself also has a toe in the horror genre with Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet (not to mention the original Scream) but stay tuned for further details on The CW’s potential Black Rose Anthology as they arrive.
