The ‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Is Getting Its Own Comic Book
The 2016 Ghostbusters reboot managed to win over fans hungry for a new take on the memorable 1984 original. Though it wasn’t necessarily a box office smash, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, as it came to be known during its home video release, developed a fan base arguably as devoted as the original. Even with its cult following, there hasn’t been much to get excited about in the year since the film released. Until this October that is, when a new comic series from IDW expands on the further adventures of everybody’s favorite ghostbustin' gals.
Announced ahead of San Diego Comic-Con by Hero Complex, IDW’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call spins out of the quartet’s appearance in last year’s Ghostbusters 101, which saw the original four men travel through space and time to team-up with Abby Yates, Erin Gilbert, Patty Tolan, and America’s darling, Jillian Holtzmann. The new series will be written by Kelly Thompson, who's no stranger at IDW having worked on Jem and the Holograms since that comic series began, and will feature art from Corin Howell, who you might know from Oni's The Mighty Zodiac or Boom’s Power Rangers.
“These ladies are magic together, and I love tapping into their crazy creativity, science-y brains and kind hearts,” Thompson told Hero Complex. “But let's be real, I'm mostly here for as many jokes as possible, and with these ladies, the jokes come fast and furious. Plus, who doesn't want to write Kevin? It's a dream come true!”
For her part, Howell is also excited to draw Kevin, but then again, who wouldn’t be happy to draw that lovable goof of a beefcake? There’s not a clear announcement of a colorist on the book, but Luis Antonio Delgado is coloring Howell’s cover for the first issue, so there’s reason to believe he’ll do the same on the interiors as well.
The first storyline will be called “What Dreams May Come,” and will feature the ladies taking on a Class III ghost, only they happen to come in the crosshairs of a Class VII specter at the same time. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call #1 arrives this October. Howell will provide art for the main cover, while Elsa Charretier and Valentina Pinto will deliver variants.
