Louisiana-based satellite communications company Globalstar showed off its new control center and plans to expand its workforce for a project with tech giant Apple.

Apple's $1.7 Billion Louisiana Project

Last year it was announced that Apple would be providing Globalstar with $1.7 billion in funding. Globalstar operates 24 low earth orbit satellites and currently is used as a part of Apple's satellite emergency messaging service, which was turned into a standard feature for messaging on satellite capable iPhones on the latest software update.

Globalstar and Apple launched the satellites sometime before the launch of its satellite messaging in 2022. It was announced that Apple will be providing funding for Globalstar to expand its current low Earth orbit fleet from 24 satellites to 32.

Apple Brings New Jobs To Louisiana

Globalstar moved its headquarters out of Silicon Valley to Covington, Louisiana in 2011, and now it's bringing even more jobs to the state with the new project for Apple. More than half of Globalstar's workforce is already residing in Louisiana, and the company says its planning to hire 75 more employees.

Globalstar is moving to expand its operations and in doing so has built a new primary satellite operations control center in the Pelican State.

As a part of this project, Globalstar agreed to a $767.1 million contract with Canadian satellite manufacturer MDA Space. The contract will see MDA Space producing over 50 advanced digital satellites for Globalstar to add to its low Earth orbit constellation for Apple.

Over 50 satellites in orbit around the globe will all be controlled and managed by Gloablstar's control center in Covington.
