According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, more than a million and a half kids run away from home every year.  There are far too many reasons and contributing factors that could be the cause for me to point out, but it's a sad state of affairs when a child leaves what should be a safe environment to brave this scary and sometimes cruel world.  That's why the latest announcement from inter-city bus transport company Greyhound is such a breath of fresh air.

Greyhound Lines Inc., in a partnership with the National Runaway Safeline, is now offering a free ride home to kids who have struck out on their own.  If the child chooses to, the “Home Free” program will give them a free ticket to get home safely, but there are some guidelines.  To be eligible for the program you must:

  • Call the NRS helpline (1-800-786-2929)
  • Be between the ages of 12 and 21.
  • Be named on an official runaway report

The service can only be used twice by the same person, and everyone involved needs to be on board with returning home.  Greyhound will even provide an adult ticket so that a responsible party can accompany kids under the age of 15.
