Growing up I had a completely different idea of what adulthood would be like. I thought I would be able to do anything I wanted without any kind of obstacle in my way.

What I thought being an adult would be like:

  • No more acne.
  • Going to bars and clubs will be the most fun in the entire world.
  • Having tons of adult friends.
  • Turning 21 is going to be a big deal.
  • Once I fall in love, my whole life will magically lay itself out for me.
  • I know exactly how my life is going to go.
  • My awkward phase is just a phase.
  • I will get to do whatever I want whenever I please.

Real truth:

  • I still have acne.
  • I am more of a stay at home type of person, and weird out by large crowds.
  • I only have a few friends that I keep up with regularly.
  • I still feel like a kid at 22.
  • Nope. Nothing is connected, unless you have connections.
  • Nope. Life is unpredictable. Things will happen unexpectedly.
  • I am just awkward.
  • I can do whatever I want as long it stays in the budget.

I had all these plans. I wanted to travel the world, live in another country for a while, and adopt every cat that needed a home. Well that didn't happen. I might still have time to do that, but I have other obligations to think about before I get to do what I want to do. It isn't about what I want to do, but what I can do once I put my job, bills, and family first.

I wish High School to prepared us for the unpredictable world of adulthood. For example: how to file for taxes, why having insurance is important, what the heck a credit score is would have all been great to know before I jumped head first into life.

This gave me the idea to run around the office and ask everyone what they thought was true about being an adult, but turned out to be wrong.
