Here's What Happened at an Austin Massage Parlor and How Texas is Fighting Human Trafficking

The fight against human trafficking in Texas continues with another disturbing discovery at a massage parlor. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and law enforcement officials have taken swift action to shut down JT Spa, located at 11416 N. Ranch Road 620, Suite I, in Austin, after uncovering suspected human trafficking activities.

Emergency Closure After Shocking Allegations

On December 2, 2024, TDLR issued a six-month emergency closure order for JT Spa. The decision followed a complaint from a visitor who reported being offered sexual services during a massage. Upon investigation, inspectors found alarming evidence: two employees were living on the premises, one worker was unlicensed, and other prohibited items were discovered.

This case marks the 16th emergency order issued under HB 3579, a law empowering TDLR to halt operations of massage establishments suspected of trafficking. This legislation, effective since September 2023, represents Texas’ commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and shutting down illegal operations.

Beyond Trafficking: A Community Fighting Back

Legislation alone cannot solve the problem. Community organizations like Beyond Trafficking, led by Stephanie Rocha, are vital in this fight. Rocha explains:
"We educate, inspire, and equip our communities to stand together in this fight. We are better together."

Beyond Trafficking has brought attention to the stark reality that West Texas is a key trafficking route in the U.S. Through campaigns like the Walk for Freedom fundraiser, they raise awareness and provide hope to survivors. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of participants, shining a light on this hidden crime.

Providing Critical Support for Survivors

Beyond Trafficking doesn’t stop at awareness. The organization collaborates with volunteers and local groups to provide survivors with essential resources, including:

  • Medical and mental health care
  • Legal and financial support
  • Mentorship programs to help survivors reintegrate into daily life
Their mission is clear: To restore dignity and hope to survivors while educating the community on how to prevent trafficking.

Take Action Today

The closure of JT Spa and the tireless work of organizations like Beyond Trafficking underscore the need for action. Whether it’s by reporting suspicious activity, supporting survivor services, or simply spreading awareness, every Texan can help make a difference. To join the fight, visit the Beyond Trafficking website to volunteer, donate, or learn more. Together, we can break the chains of human trafficking in Texas and beyond.
