Grayson Rodriguez Has His First Major League Win

The Baltimore Orioles rookie who played high school baseball at Central Heights, just outside of Nacogdoches, Texas, was the winning pitcher Sunday evening as the Orioles defeated the Detroit Tigers 6-4.

Not only did Rodriguez notch his first victory, but he did it in a dominating way. He gave up no runs in five innings of work. He struck out nine Tigers, eight of those strikeouts came in his last three innings.

Filthy Stuff

Grayson's 96-97 mph fastball was overpowering, but it was his offspeed pitches that were just filthy. The huge late movement on his change-up left Detroit hitters in disbelief. They were either swinging and missing (by a lot) or they were watching and wondering how that ball ended up in the strike zone.

The video below gives you an indication of that. Jump ahead to the 4:10 mark and keep watching until 6:10...nasty stuff!

Rodriguez now has 12.6 strikeouts per 9 innings. He ranks in the top five overall in that category in all of Major League Baseball. He still had his first-inning struggles, but he was able to overcome those and then settle into his dominating performance.

Ketchup and Mustard?

In his postgame interview, Rodriguez was asked if there was a locker room celebration for earning his first Major League win. He was rather coy with his answer, but he did mention that lots of mustard and ketchup were involved.

Apparently, some of it may take a while to wash out...I don't think I want to know.
