Why Bossier Parish Fired Two Deputies for Swapping Wives

TikTok sent me down a wild local rabbit hole this week, and now I can't stop thinking about what happens to your personal life when you sign up for public service.

If you’ve seen Bossier City trending on your feed recently, you can thank Reb, the legal creator behind the massive Rebuttal Pod account (with over two million followers). She brought up a local story from years back, framing it alongside one of the most famous sports scandals in history.

It turns out, if you want to trade families, your profession matters.

Back in March 1973, New York Yankees pitchers Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich held separate press conferences to announce they had completely swapped lives: wives, children, and even the family dogs. It shocked the sports world, but they kept playing ball.

Fast forward to Bossier Parish, where two sheriff’s deputies tried a similar arrangement, with a very different outcome.

Deputies Brandon Coker and Michael Golden had been close friends since they were 16. Coker joined the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office in 2006, and Golden joined in 2003. Eventually, the pair decided to swap wives and move in with their new partners before their respective divorces were finalized.

When Sheriff Julian Whittington caught wind of the situation, he issued a direct order: end the living arrangements, or face the consequences. The deputies refused, citing their personal freedom, and were promptly fired for violating departmental policy.

The legal battle went all the way to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. On May 23, 2017, the court ruled in favor of the Sheriff’s Office in Coker v. Whittington. The court decided that when law enforcement officers enter public service, they surrender certain constitutional protections over their private sexual choices, specifically when those choices damage the department's reputation, credibility, and morale.

So what's the takeaway from this viral deep dive? Major League Baseball might let you trade lives, but in Bossier Parish, the law draws a hard line.
