One of summer's most common fears centers on the safety of our children while they are at home on summer vacation.

During the school year, for most of the day, those kids are under adult supervision surrounded by trained professionals who can handle most emergency situations. However, that summer vacation has the kids at home, usually unsupervised, and left to their own devices should there be some type of emergency.

But now, thanks to the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office, those kids could get some formal training with essential life-saving skills.

In just one week, next Saturday, May 10, CPSO is offering local youth first aid and CPR training at Sheriff’s Safety Town, located at 8910 Jewella Avenue in Shreveport.

In a notice from CPSO we learn that children ages 8 to 12 can attend from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, while teens aged 13 to 16 will receive hands-on training from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Certified instructors will lead interactive workshops covering how to perform CPR on adults, children, and infants, as well as how to provide basic first aid for injuries, burns, and other common emergencies.

Attendees will also learn how to respond to choking and cardiac arrest, and they will receive important water safety tips.

No prior experience is needed to attend and each participant will receive a certificate of completion.

Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. To register, contact Deputy Vernita Williams at (318) 681-0869 or email vernita.williams@caddosheriff.org.
