Anyone who was caught up in yesterday's emergency closure of I-220 west near the Cross Lake Bridge can attest that, though the repair work was much needed, it was a virtual traffic nightmare.

Having the inside, left lane, repaired after the concrete "blew up" due to June's intensive heat, DOTD still has more repairs to do in the area.

In an announcement from DOTD, we learn that we will essentially repeat the process this coming Monday, July14.

DOTD advises motorists that from approximately 8:00 am until 4:00 pm on Monday, there will be another closure of I-220 westbound between the Cross Lake Bridge and Lakeshore Drive.

But this time it will be the outside (right) lane of the bypass that will be closed while crews finish the emergency repairs in that area.

What Caused The Concrete To "Blow Up" On I-220?

For those unaware of the issue in this area, periods of extreme heat can cause concrete pavement to expand, resulting in buckling at the roadway joints that can occur quickly and without warning. That's what took place in this area and DOTD crews are addressing these ‘blow-ups’, as they’re commonly referred to.

Existing permitted oversize loads will be accommodated through the work zone.

Of course, this work will be performed "Weather Permitting" so inclement weather could delay, extend or alter the scheduled work day/hours.

DOTD appreciates your patience and reminds you to please drive with caution through the construction site and be on the lookout for work crews and their equipment. Remember to leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Area residents should exercise caution when driving, walking, or biking near an active construction zone.
