It's National Doughnut or "Donut" Day. Celebrated each year on the first Friday of June, this day was created to honor the Salvation Army Lassies. Those were the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

According to nationaldaycalendar.com,

In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home-cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.”

Since its humble beginnings, the popularity of doughnuts has exploded to the point that they've almost become a "food group" of their own.

Of course, since there are so many styles and flavors of doughnuts, they've sparked many heated debates.

Thanks to some research done by mroelectric.com, we now know the favorites of every state in the country.  However, most of us in the immediate Shreveport/Bossier area are going to totally disagree with what they have found out about Louisiana's favorite doughnut.

Gleaning through piles and piles of Google trends, researchers determined that Louisiana's favorite type/flavor of doughnut is the plain old glazed.  In fact, glazed was the favorite for the entire Southern and Midwest regions.

That, we can probably accept with very little argument.  Those chocolate ones are powerful, but glazed indeed rules the roost around here.

But that's where we separate from their findings. Though researchers data represented Louisiana as a whole, there's obviously a glaring error in their findings when you isolate the Shreveport/Bossier area.

According to them, Louisiana's favorite doughnut chain is Krispy Kreme.

Really?  Sure, we have Krispy Kreme here.  We even have Dunkin' and several smaller mom and pop stores around these parts.

And sure, they do a good job, but once you've been exposed to our clear winner around here, they aren't even in the same doughnut world!

Around these parts, it's Southern Maid.  Oh, and don't act like that information shocked you.  You knew several paragraphs ago.  I only built up the drama for those new to the area.  But once they've been exposed, their lives are changed forever. Just look at what it did to Elvis!

Sounds like it's time for a couple dozen glazed to go!
