My dog, Olive, and I have been rocking together for almost 16 years, and if there is one thing my puppy loves more than anything, it is a good car ride and a joint shopping spree. I am constantly on the hunt for local spots with pet-friendly policies where we can browse the aisles together.

At the same time, I completely respect businesses and restaurants that reserve store access strictly for service animals. That is 100% legitimate, and like most responsible pet owners, I hate seeing people abuse those laws.

That said, I recently saw someone walking their dog through Target, and I will admit, I got instant dog-mom envy! Target is my absolute favorite store, and my immediate thought was, "Why can't I bring my pup too?!" Unfortunately, both Target and Sam’s Club are strictly service-animal-only zones. Because they sell fresh groceries, snacks, and host open Starbucks counters, FDA health codes and local public health regulations legally prohibit non-service pets from entering.

So, if you are like me and looking for great spots where you and your fur baby won't get turned away at the door, check out these dog-friendly options:

Pet Stores: Petco, PetSmart, and local independent boutiques like Hollywood Feed.

Hardware & Outdoor Outlets: Home Depot, Tractor Supply Company, and Bass Pro Shops.

Clothing & Home Goods Retailers: Old Navy, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Michaels, and Hobby Lobby.

Before you load up the car, please keep in mind that even pet-friendly stores can ask you to leave if your dog is not on a leash or well-behaved. If your pup is overly reactive or struggles around crowds, focus on getting some professional guidance from a certified dog trainer first to keep everyone safe and happy!
