New Study Shows Louisiana Families Pay Less for Senior Services Than Anywhere Else

As the U.S. population ages, with more than 62 million Americans now over the age of 65 and projections expecting a 23% increase in the coming decades, affordable senior care is becoming an increasingly urgent priority. A new report from Caring.com reveals that Louisiana leads the nation in home care affordability, making it a top choice for families looking to support aging loved ones without breaking the bank.

Home Care in Louisiana Costs Less Than Any Other State

According to the study, the average annual cost for home care in Louisiana is $50,336, the lowest in the country. That’s a notable contrast to the national trend, where home health aide costs rose by 3% in 2024. Louisiana bucked that trend entirely, seeing a 10% drop in costs compared to the previous year.

In contrast, states like Mississippi and Alabama tie for second place in affordability, both with annual costs of $57,200. Arkansas and New Mexico round out the top five.

Why This Matters for Louisiana Families

For many residents, home care is a more comfortable and cost-effective alternative to institutional settings like nursing homes. It allows seniors to maintain independence and age in place, while still receiving necessary support for day-to-day tasks.

Caring.com’s experts stress that understanding the level of care needed is key:

“Home care generally refers to non-medical support, while home health care includes clinical assistance. Knowing what services are truly required can help families avoid overpaying.”

They also emphasize the importance of comparing providers and understanding the differences between public and private options, as costs can vary widely.

Other Notable Findings from the Study

  • South Dakota offers the most affordable assisted living, averaging $52,200 per year.
  • Texas leads in nursing home affordability, with private rooms averaging $85,045 annually.
  • North Dakota spends the most per Medicaid enrollee on senior care, topping $13,000 annually.

With affordability and access at the forefront of senior care discussions, Louisiana’s top ranking offers both relief and opportunity for families preparing for their loved ones' next chapter.
