SHREVEPORT, LA – It is amazing to see how many great people we have in our community. Most are willing to stop whatever they are doing and help someone else in need.

I have had so many people ask me if there are any last minute gifts needed for Operation Santa Claus youngsters. It is so heartwarming to know my home town folks are so giving.

So I was not surprised to see an amazing animal rescue story posted by some of my friends this week. Sherry Talley Lemaire and several others were involved in helping to save a gorgeous white pelican.

Sherry posted this message:

A really cool community effort unfolded where people joined to help save a white pelican with a hook in its foot and fishing line entanglement at C. Bickham Dickson park. The full story with overcoming obstacles and finding solutions for this water rescue is amazing. For now, just a brief thank you to some of the many people involved. Jodie Dupuy Ford, Rufus Lemaire, Wildlife and Fisheries agents Hoek and Meyers, and Tarah Thomas.

Thomas got involved because she actively works to help animals all around our community.

She says Wildlife and Fisheries agents Hoek and Meyers brought a boat out to C. Bickham Dickson Park so they could get close to the bird to help him get free. She brought a cage out to the scene in case the bird was going to need medical attention. She says “The poor fellow had a huge fishing hook in his leg. Once they got it cut and out of his leg, he was ok and took off flying!”

This park is one of Shreveport’s true gems and you can see all kinds of wildlife out there. I am so glad they saved this amazing bird and he will get to come back and enjoy our local park.

Thanks to everyone involved.
