Its spring, so hurricanes aren't on the top of everyone's mind. But in just a few months, Louisiana is going to be talking about the storms in the tropics pretty regularly.

The 2025 hurricane season in the Atlantic region gets underway on June 1st. Although preparations for the season are already well underway. Including the ways we will be identifying these storms. In other words, the names of the storms. Those storms have already had their names laid out.

In case you've never been aware, the World Meteorological Organization picks the names of storms before the season ever starts. Generally the list comes with 21 names, because they don't use names starting with Q, U, X, Y, or Z. They avoid those letters because of the lack of names that start with them.

With that limited number, it is possible that there could be more storms than names. When that has happened in the past, storm names have reverted to the Greek alphabet (something that won't happen anymore). Although that's only happened twice, and it didn't happen until the last couple decades. The two years that we ran out of names were 2005 and 2020. Both of those years were exceptionally bad hurricane seasons.

In 2005, there were four Category 5 hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina. A storm that did so much damage to Louisiana it has become a legendary point in American history. The 2020 season was also a historic year, hitting a record number of named storms, but also not providing any Category 5 storms. That doesn't mean 2020 didn't do exceptional damage to the US, especially Louisiana.

In 2020, Hurricane Laura struck Louisiana as a Category 4 storm, but a strong Category 4, with 150 mph winds at landfall. Laura hit Louisiana on August 27th, 2020. Just over a month later, on October 9th, 2020, Hurricane Delta struck Louisiana...only 12 miles east of where Hurricane Laura made landfall. The 2020 season was very difficult for Louisiana.

Five years later, Louisiana his hoping this trend isn't on a 5-year-cycle, and this season leaves the state, and its coast, alone. But if the state does face a storm from the gulf, it will likely have one of these names:
