LSU Welcomes Record Number Of Freshmen This Fall
LSU Sets New Records with Freshman Enrollment and Campus Growth
A Milestone Year for LSU
Louisiana State University is marking a milestone this fall. Interim President Matt Lee says the Baton Rouge campus welcomed nearly 8,200 first-time freshmen, the largest class ever. More than 5,000 of those students come from Louisiana, a sign that the state’s flagship university is continuing to attract homegrown talent.
Lee described this group as one of the most academically impressive to date. With an average GPA of a remarkable 3.85, and more than 450 valedictorians, he called the incoming class “the most accomplished in LSU history.”
Systemwide Momentum
The excitement isn’t limited to Baton Rouge. LSU campuses in Eunice, Alexandria, and right here in Shreveport are also reporting record enrollment this year. For LSU Shreveport, that means more students staying close to home while still gaining access to the resources of the state’s largest higher education system.
Research Growth and National Standing
Another major achievement announced during Lee’s State of the University address is LSU’s research enterprise topping $500 million for the first time. Lee said the university plans to grow that number toward $800 or $900 million while nearly doubling the number of doctoral students. He emphasized that these efforts keep LSU competitive nationally and strengthen its role as a hub for advanced research and workforce preparation.

Building for the Future
To keep pace with demand, LSU is making major investments in facilities. The Our Lady of the Lake Health Interdisciplinary Science Building is set to open next year, and an additional 1,200 student beds are planned by 2027. Lee also announced plans for a new 193,000-square-foot library that will serve as a centerpiece for academics.

In addition, LSU is putting more than $100 million toward a new Construction and Advanced Manufacturing Building, reflecting the state’s focus on preparing students for high-demand industries.
The Big Picture
From record-breaking enrollment to historic research growth and large-scale construction projects, LSU is positioning itself for long-term impact. Lee summed it up by saying the university is “working to grow scholarship and talent development” while making sure students have the resources they need to thrive.
