
SNAP Benefit Changes Coming to Louisiana: Foods You Won’t Be Able to Buy
SNAP benefit changes are on the way in Louisiana. The new restrictions don’t go into effect right away, but in just a few weeks, SNAP recipients will no longer be able to use the cards to buy certain non-nutritious foods.
Why Are the SNAP Changes Happening
The State Health Department says s the restrictions are being put in place “to encourage healthier choices and help reduce obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other diet-related health issues."

What Are the SNAP Changes in Louisiana
You will no longer be able to buy the following items with SNAP money:
• Soft drinks
• Energy drinks
• Candy (including gum and mints)
When Do the SNAP Changes Go into Effect in Louisiana
Starting February 18, 2026, all SNAP households can no longer use SNAP benefits to buy these items. But this change is not permanent, at least not yet. The project begins next month and is scheduled to end on January 12, 2028. But legislative leaders are expected to look at the data over the next 2 years and make a decision about keeping this ban in place.
What You Can Still Buy with SNAP in Louisiana
• Fruits and vegetables
• Meats, poultry, and fish
• Dairy products like milk and cheese
• Breads, cereals, and grains
• Seeds and plants for growing food at home

What Happens at Grocery Stores in Louisiana
Retailers must have their point-of-sale (POS) systems updated and they also have to submit the state-provided self-attestation form by January 7, 2026. Staff members must also be trained on the new rules to avoid errors and ensure smooth checkouts.
