Northwest Louisiana does not get the direct impact from Hurricanes like our neighbors to the south. But we do see our share of some extreme weather. And our extremes include tornadoes, ice storms and flooding. Many of the top 20 weather extremes in the Shreveport Bossier City area have happened over the past 25 years.

Northwest Louisiana can feel the remnants of hurricanes and that typically includes intense rain storms which can spawn tornadoes. That has happened several times across this region.

Some of these weather extremes have caused some serious damage in northwest Louisiana. Tornado outbreaks have claimed lives in this part of the state. Flooding has left hundreds of families scrambling to make repairs and drought conditions have forced farmers to jump into high gear to try to save their crops.

2024 Also Brought a Crazy Day Back in the Summer

This year, Shreveport experienced a remarkable series of severe tornado events. You might remember on July 8 when we got pummeled by a severe weather system. On that day, the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Shreveport issued 67 tornado warnings within a nine-hour period. That is a record for tornado warnings in a single day. These warnings covered North Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and parts of Northeast Texas. The NWS confirmed 36 tornadoes on that day alone, with many of them being on the ground simultaneously.

The storms caused widespread damage across the region.
