Ex-Saints QB: New Orleans “Best Situation” for Shedeur Sanders
A former New Orleans Saints quarterback has declared that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders getting picked by the Saints is the "Best Situation" for him. So will the Saints actually pull the trigger on that?
Chase Daniel spent 46 of his 74 career regular season NFL games with the New Orleans Saints. While he didn't ever start a game for the Saints, he was with the franchise for 4 seasons. That means he worked with current Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis, played with some of the players who are still on the Saints roster, and lived the "Saints way" for a big chunk of his career.
Now Daniel is a TV analyst, and has recently offered his belief that the New Orleans Saints should take Shedeur Sanders with the 9th overall pick. Not just that the Saints should take him, but that Shedeur should welcome it, because Daniel thinks its the best place for him right away...
"...if you go the Saints, and you sit behind (Derek) Carr for a year, and Kellen Moore's the head coach, I think that's the best situation for Shedeur. Like, to not rush him. Not to say he can't have success (right away)"
Daniel wrapped up his thoughts by simply saying:
"The Saints, for me, make a ton of sense."
Now that doesn't mean that the Saints will be able to take Shedeur at the 9th overall pick in next month's NFL Draft, because he might not last that long. Right now, there are plenty of mock drafts that have him going with the top overall pick to the Tennessee Titans. Others have him going #2 overall to the Cleveland Browns, and most of the mock drafts that have him getting past the #2 pick don't have him making it past the Las Vegas Raiders at the 6th overall pick.
So for the Saints to even have a chance to get Shedeur, they will need some luck, or to make a move.
While it does make sense for the Saints to create a succession plan behind Derek Carr, sacrificing future draft capital to do it might not be the best plan. There will still be players who can instantly impact the Saints roster at the 9th pick, and honestly trading back is probably an even better option for the franchise.
The Saints are still in "kick the can" mode with their salary cap situation. Even though they're getting to the end of that process, that just means they're going to need players to replace the aging stars who will be falling off the salary cap soon. So the more picks they can accumulate in the next 2-3 drafts, the better. If they can fall back a few spots in the draft, and pick up a second-round pick for their troubles, that could be another starter they could possibly add to their team in this draft.
But at the end of the day, the Saints are usually one of the most interesting teams during the NFL Draft. They're likely going to make a trade, or make a splash. If this year they trade up in the draft to get Shedeur Sanders, it will be both.
