Derek Carr Reportedly Feared to Have Fractured His Left, Non-Throwing Hand
The good news from Sunday's New Orleans Saints game against the New York Giants is that they won the game 14-11 thanks to a blocked field goal in the final seconds.
The bad news is that quarterback Derek Carr left the game after flying in the air in an attempt to secure a first down on a designed run in the fourth quarter.
Carr left the game at that point and was replaced by backup Jake Haener.
While it was difficult to figure out exactly what Carr injured on the play, you could see he was favoring his left hand.
Reports by several sources say that Carr was sporting a cast on that hand after the game. Additionally, it's been reported that the fear is that Carr suffered a fracture in that hand.
ESPN's Katherine Terrell is also reporting Carr suffered a potential concussion.
"They're going to do all the scans and the X-rays and all that, so we'll kinda play that by ear," Saints interim coach Darren Rizzi said of the hand injury. "But he made a phenomenal effort to try to keep our drive going, to get a first down there, just an unselfish player diving and I think he tried to put his hand down and brace himself."
There has been nothing officially released by the team yet, so these reports are all we have to go on.
If that's the case, there's a good chance Carr will be missing some time.
Earlier this season, the team didn't fare well with Spencer Rattler at the helm. He started three games, all losses for the Black & Gold.
Once Carr returned on November 3 against the Carolina Panthers, Haener returned to the backup role while Rattler has been the third-string/emergency quarterback on game days.
If Carr does miss some games, the next two will be tough for the Saints, as they're at home against the Washington Commanders next week followed by a Monday Night road game against the Green Bay Packers the following week.
Of course, a lot of Saints fans are seemingly hoping for a tank job the rest of the way so the team can secure a higher draft pick.
The Saints sit at 5-8 and third place in the NFC South behind Atlanta (6-7) and Tampa Bay (7-6).
