Unclaimed Louisiana Powerball $1 Million Winner Expires Monday
(KMDL-FM) Right before our very eyes, we have watched an Easy 5 Lottery winner worth $50,000 expire and find its proceeds being redirected. That happened as of October 22, according to the Louisiana Lottery. On Monday, another big-money lottery-winning ticket could meet the same fate. Except that ticket is valued at $1,000,000.00,yeah it was a Powerball winner.
The first question you're probably asking is, "How in the hell do you let that much money slip through your fingers"? We don't know, but we do have theories that you can examine on your own.
The other question is probably connected to the "funds redirected" comment. The Louisiana Lottery does have a provision in its rules of operation that explains exactly what happens when a lottery prize winner expires.
What Happens to a Louisiana Lottery Prize if the Ticket Expires?
"Once unclaimed prizes have surpassed their redemption periods, the money is transferred to the Lottery's unclaimed prize fund, which is returned to players in the form of increased payouts on instant-win tickets, second-chance drawings, and other player promotions." That verbiage is taken directly from the Louisiana Lottery website and its Unclaimed Prizes page.
The prize that expired on Thursday, October 22nd was a $50,000 Easy 5 winner from April 25, 2026. That ticket was sold in Rayville, Louisiana, at the S Mart #1 on Harrison Street. So technically, that money has been redirected.
The $1 million Powerball winner was sold in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was sold at the Circle K Store on Jones Creek Road. The winner was made on April 29, 2026. That was the night Louisiana had several million-dollar-or-more winners. So, the frenzy should have encouraged anyone who bought a ticket for the game to at least check their numbers. This ticket expires on Monday, October 26, 2026.

Lafayette's latest big lottery win has not been claimed, granted that big win only happened on October 17th. It is a $70,000 win in the Easy 5 game. The winning ticket was purchased at Albertson's on Ambassador Caffery Parkway. This is the one at Kaliste Saloom Road. The ticket holder has until April 15, 2027, to claim the prize.
Lottery Experts Suggest Most Likely Reason $1 Million Powerball Winner Will Expire
The most often discussed reason that the $1 million ticket has not been redeemed is along the lines of "I forgot". Here's why that seems logical. In the drawing back in April, there were multiple million-dollar winning tickets sold in Louisiana. All of the tickets picked the same numbers down one side of the lottery ticket.
For reference, it's like everyone picked the first answer on each line in one of those #2 pencil fill-in-the-dot tests. So, that suggests the ticket was purchased without much thought, perhaps an afterthought. And therefore, where the ticket was placed, left, or discarded was not so much of a priority because, perhaps, the purchaser didn't remember buying the darn thing.

The fact that the ticket was purchased for a Wednesday drawing might play into the "I forgot" theory as well. The other theory is the "beat the tax man theory". I am not sure if holding the ticket or not laying claim to it until the very last day offers a tax savings. But perhaps the ticket holder is putting together a "company" or "tax shelter" to keep as much money under their control.
Under the current tax structure, if you claimed a $1 million lottery win in Louisiana, you'd wind up keeping about $670,000. That is after federal and state assessments. The tax rate works out to be very near 33%.
Is Unclaimed One Million Dollar Louisiana Lottery Winner a Case of Murder?
Don't think it was. We have no reason to believe that was involved. But it would make for an interesting story. Perhaps you need a break from reading. Here, go buy some scratch-offs. But buy them before Halloween, and if you win, don't forget to collect your money.
