If you will soon be filing an individual tax return in Louisiana, then know you have several free options at your disposal.

Starting on Friday, the Internal Revenue Service will offer a Free File tool to help taxpayers ahead of the official start of the tax season.

The IRS Free File will begin accepting individual tax returns on Friday, January 10, 2025.

The agency says that millions of taxpayers nationwide will be able to access free software tools offered by its partners online.

“The IRS remains committed to its partnership with Free File Inc. to ensure taxpayers have free and secure options for filing their taxes electronically,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said.

Eight private-sector partners will also provide online guided tax software products for taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income of $84,000 or less.

Those taxpayers with an AGI above $84,000 can use the Free File Fillable Forms beginning January 27.

“This program continues to be a valuable resource for eligible individuals looking to file their taxes for free through this unique program,” Werfel continued.

The Free File service allows taxpayers to prepare and file their returns as well as hold them before being electronically filed and accepted.

The IRS has launched a "Get Ready" campaign to remind taxpayers of the simple steps they can take to get prepared to file their 2024 federal tax returns.

Planning can help you file an accurate return and avoid delays that can slow your tax refund.

As a reminder, the 2025 tax season deadline to file a federal return is April 15.

Returns and payments for your Louisiana state taxes are due May 15.
