Ground Beef Sold at Walmart in Texas Recalled – What to Know

Despite the threat of a passing shower or maybe a torrential downpour folks in Houston,  Orange, Beaumont, Winnie, and countless other cities and towns in Texas are looking forward to a weekend cookout.

Cooking out is something that we do a lot of in the Lone Star State and right now, before the afternoon temperatures include a heat index is primetime for outdoor grilling here where the stars at night are big and bright, if you know what I mean.

Hamburgers are a staple of the Texas weekend cookout.  Granted we have been known to pop a brisket or a steak on the pit too. Oh, and don't forget the sausage, we love sausage on the grill. Of course, a great hamburger begins with quality beef, and for a lot of Texas consumers that beef comes from Walmart.

What Ground Beef Products Are Being Recalled at Walmart?

But before you break the seal on that package of ground beef and start forming patties, if you purchased your ground beef from Walmart you do need to double-check some packaging information because there has been a recall announced. 

Cargill Meat Solutions based in Pennsylvania is recalling some 16,243 pounds of ground beef over possible contamination. The announcement came yesterday from the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service. The products in question were produced on April 26-April 27, 2024. The meat was distributed to Walmart retail locations across the nation.

Here is what you need to look for on the packaging if you suspect that you have purchased some of the potentially contaminated beef products:

• 2.25-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing “93% LEAN 7% FAT ALL NATURAL LEAN GROUND BEEF” with lot code 117 and establishment number “EST. 86P” printed on the back of the label.
• 1.33-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing four “PRIME RIB BEEF STEAK BURGERS PATTIES” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P” printed on the back of the label.
• 2.25-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing “85% LEAN 15% FAT ALL NATURAL ANGUS PREMIUM GROUND BEEF” with lot code 117 and establishment number “EST. 86P” printed on the back of the label.
• 2.25-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing “80% LEAN 20% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P” printed on the back of the label.
• 1.33-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing four “80% LEAN 20% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK PATTIES” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P” printed on the back of the label.
• 1.33-lbs. plastic-wrapped trays containing four “90% LEAN 10% FAT ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF SIRLOIN PATTIES” with lot code 118 and establishment number “EST. 86P” printed on the back of the label.

The main contamination concern is E.coli. There have been no specific cases or reactions reported by consumers and there have been no confirmed cases of the bacterial-borne disease. Symptoms of E.coli include stomach cramps, bloody stools, dehydration, and possibly death.

The symptoms of an E.coli infection usually present themselves after three or four days. Most people recover fully without serious repercussions but E.coli can be particularly troublesome for the elderly and the very young.

If you discover that you have purchased some of the recalled products you are advised to throw the package away or return it to the store where it was purchased.
