J.J. Abrams’ First New TV Series in Years Is Officially Coming to HBO
It’s happening – J.J. Abrams is writing and creating a new drama for HBO. The Fringe and LOST creator has sold new outer space drama Demimonde to the Westworld network with a full series order, following a tense bidding war with Apple.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams gave his Demimonde spec script to HBO on the strength of their development of Westworld, which Abrams’ Bad Robot produces. Apple also fiercely bid for the project, given its intense competition to develop TV projects of late. Demimonde is the first TV series Abrams has created and written himself since Fringe in 2008, while the new project is described thusly:
The Abrams drama is about a family — consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband and their young daughter — who all get into a terrible car crash. After the mother winds up in a coma, her daughter begins digging through her experiments in the basement and winds up transporting to another land amid a world’s battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. Her father then follows her into this new world.
For the moment, it remains unclear if Abrams might direct the “epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama” pilot, as he had with LOST (but not Fringe). Somehow, we imagine writing and directing the ninth Star Wars film might start to pull focus. Stay tuned for more on Abrams’ Demimonde in the meantime.
