Kristen Bell on Dax Shepard’s Addictive Past: ‘He Knows The Value of Things’
Kristen Bell is expertly familiar with the "for better or worse" clause of her marriage to Dax Shepard, she told CBS Sunday Morning in an interview yesterday (July 24).
Bell, who wed Shepard in 2013, told reporter Tracy Smith that she values her husband and the couple's two children more than any conceivable film or TV project. Shepard has a history with addiction, she noted, and his commitment to recovery mollified any doubts she's had about their bond.
"He knows the value of things," she said. "He was an addict for many, many years and he pulled himself out of it, and he’s been sober for 11, 12 years now...and he knows how many times he’s messed up and how many times he’s been really close to losing everything."
"I always think, if I’m on my deathbed, what am I gonna be thinking about?” she added. “And it won’t be some random movie I participated in, or some TV show. It will be my family."
In 2012, Shepard told Playboy he had many drugs of choice during his "party days," but that he learned to get help when he started seriously dating Bell.
"I just loved to get f----- up — drinking, cocaine, opiates, marijuana, diet pills, pain pills, everything," he said. "Mostly my love was Jack Daniel’s and cocaine. I was famous for going out on Thursday night to have a couple of beers, and that just led all the way to Saturday night."
"All the things I’d done were terrifying to her, and she had a hard time believing I would ever be able to stay married and monogamous and a father and all those things," he added. "For the first year and a half we were together that was what we battled over almost weekly."
