Wayne Turns Down Future Super Bowl Halftime Offers
Louisiana's own Lil Wayne drew a line in the sand and promised to never play a Super Bowl halftime show after he "broke."
During an interview with Rolling Stone, Lil Wayne opened up about the Super Bowl LIX halftime show, something he has opened up about a few times before. Lil Wayne was hopeful to play the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX in his hometown of New Orleans.
Lil Wayne was nowhere near the halftime stage when the show started, instead, Kendrick Lamar had been handpicked to perform the show. Lil Wayne was vocal about how he felt disrespected, and explained to Rolling Stone that even if offered to play next year's Bowl game, he would refuse.
Lil Wayne was hopeful to get the spot for the show, he had been going out of his way trying to land the spot on stage. He had already been in talks with the NFL to possibly play the show in his hometown. When Kendrick was announced for the show, Wayne says he got a phone call from the NFL where they apologized and explained they don't make the final choice.
Lil Wayne explained how defeated he felt during the entire situation, saying it "broke" him at one point. During the actual halftime show itself, he didn't even bother to watch it, opting to just go outside for a smoke: "every time I looked, it was nothing that made me want to go inside and see what was going on."
Before the show, Wayne reached out to let Kendrick know his anger wasn't at Kendrick, but more at the media for how they covered the situation. During the halftime show, Wayne just played pool with a friend and stepped outside for a smoke.
Even though Lil Wayne has now vowed to never play the half-time show on the biggest stage the NFL has to offer, he did accept a gig with the league as an analyst on NFL Gameday Morning for the 2024-2025 season.
